The Happy Student Programme is a 7-week Chinese story reading and values education programme. Through three quality picture books, live 1-on-1 guidance, online challenge tasks and parent-child activities, children do more than finish reading. They practise expressing themselves, showing empathy, respecting others and taking responsibility.
For P3 students. Sessions are taught in Cantonese, using Traditional Chinese picture books.
Programme Overview
The programme begins with three Chinese picture books. Children explore characters, plots and conflicts, then turn reading comprehension into real-life language, choices and actions through online challenge tasks and live guidance.
Each book is connected to one core value theme.
From the Week 1 pre-assessment to the Week 7 post-assessment and growth report.
One 25-minute session each week from Week 2 onwards.

Reading is where children begin to understand themselves and the world. A good story can help them become happier, more confident and more caring learners.
Three Core Values
The programme focuses on three values closely connected to children's daily lives: respect for others, empathy and responsibility. Each theme begins with a Chinese picture book and extends into family, school and peer contexts.
Respect for Others
While expressing themselves, children learn to hear other voices too. Understanding boundaries, differences and mutual response is the starting point of positive relationships.
Empathy
Children learn to notice others' emotions, needs and situations, understand things from another person's perspective, and respond with caring words or actions.
Responsibility
Children learn about promises, tasks and consequences, and practise managing their choices and completing their responsibilities at home and at school.
Learning Goal
The learner can recognise, understand and reflect on how respect for others, empathy and responsibility are shown in personal, family, school and peer contexts, and communicate thoughts, feelings and choices appropriately to build positive relationships, promote well-being and grow as a happier learner.
Children understand characters, plots, conflicts and choices while strengthening Chinese reading comprehension and oral expression.
Children identify emotions, needs and situations in themselves and others, building empathy and emotional awareness.
Children turn values into respectful language, caring responses and responsible choices.
Learning Journey
Week 1 starts with a challenge task as a pre-assessment. From Week 2 there is one 1-on-1 session each week, and children complete one book every two weeks. Each time a book is completed there is a 1-on-1 session, a challenge task and a parent-child activity, ending with a post-assessment in Week 7.
Before reading the first book, children complete an online challenge task as the programme pre-assessment to establish their starting point. There is no 1-on-1 session this week.
Children begin reading I Have Something to Say. The first 1-on-1 session guides them into the story, exploring self-expression and respect for others.
Children finish the first book. This week includes a 1-on-1 session, an online challenge task and a parent-child activity that brings respect into daily life.
Children begin reading The Invisible Boy. The 1-on-1 session guides them into situations of being overlooked, noticed and accepted.
Children finish the second book. This week includes a 1-on-1 session, an online challenge task and a parent-child activity to practise empathy and care.
Children begin reading The Boy and the Egg. The 1-on-1 session helps them understand tasks, commitments, choices and consequences.
Children finish the third book. This week includes a 1-on-1 session and a parent-child activity, with a summary challenge serving as the post-assessment for the whole programme.
The report brings together the pre-assessment, post-assessment, oral expression, theme tasks and parent-child feedback so parents can see changes in understanding, expression and action.
Parent-child activities are counted separately from the child's own challenge tasks. If parents are unable to complete an activity, it will not affect the child's challenge task results.
Programme Features
The programme combines story reading, live interaction, scenario tasks, family participation and growth evidence. Learning does not stop at finishing a book; parents can see how children grow in values, language and expression.
Quality Chinese picture books help children enter values-based themes naturally through characters and plots.
Coaches use questions, follow-up prompts and feedback to capture each child's understanding, language and expression.
Life-like scenario questions guide children to make judgements, express feelings and suggest actions.
Shared reading and everyday activities help values education continue naturally at home.
Growth Evidence
Assessment is not just about scores. It observes whether children can move from understanding a situation, to considering others' feelings, and finally to responding with appropriate words or actions.
Can the child understand the situation, identify the value issue and explain what happened?
Can the child take the character's perspective and understand how behaviour affects others' emotions or relationships?
Can the child turn understanding and reflection into specific language, choices or real-life actions?

The Happy Student Programme helps children learn to understand themselves, care for others and make more mature choices in family and school life through Chinese reading.
With coach guidance, children understand story content, express their views and practise speaking in complete sentences about their thoughts and feelings.
Through story characters and real-life situations, children learn to identify feelings in themselves and others and understand different needs.
The programme goes beyond explaining values. Through tasks and parent-child activities, children practise respectful, caring and responsible actions.
